non fiction reading response

The article “Arms Shipment Was Target as Israel Bombed Syria, U.S says” by Isabel Kershner is about how Israeli warplanes attacked deep inside Syrian territory. American officials said, “they believed the target was a convoy carrying sophisticated antiaircraft weaponry on the outskirts of Damascus that was intended for the Hezbollah Shiite militia in Lebanon,”(Kershner 1). They said that were notified about the attack. The Syrian government called it an act of Israeli arrogance and aggression. The Syrian military stated that a scientific research facility in the suburbs of Damascus had been hit and they denied that the target was a convoy.
According to the article, Israeli officials warned that they’re monitoring the possible movement of weapon in the Syrian conflict. The article also states, “It was the first time in more than five years that Israel’s air force had attacked a target in Syria, which has remained in a technical state of war with Israel although both sides have maintained an uneasy peace along their decades-old armistice line” (Kershner 1). The author is trying to tell us that this attack has been a surprise. The attack was unexpected because they attacked for the first time after more than five years. With that long time span, the attack couldn’t have been predicted.
The author tells us that Hezbollah has replenished and increased its weapons stocks after their war with Israel in 2006. “An unidentified number of Israeli jets flying below radar had hit the research facility, killing two people and causing ‘huge material damage.’” (Kershner 2). The Lebanese army said that Israeli warplanes carried out two stories but made no mentions of attacks. This means that even though the attack was unexpected, Hezbollah was still prepared. They were preparing themselves after the war in 2006. They knew that it could happen again so they have increased weapon stocks in order to be prepared.
After reading this article, I have concluded that Hezbollah is well prepared for what Israel could do next. This attack was unexpected but Hezbollah could’ve fought back since the people have been increasing their weapon stocks. The next time Israel strikes back, Hezbollah will be ready.
