In the story, Juliet is only thirteen years old. Being this age, her mother, Lady Capulet, already considers her a grown woman and expects her to be married. "Younger than you here in Verona, ladies of esteem, are already made mothers" (1.3 lines 75-80). This quote supports the idea of Lady Capulet considering Juliet as a grown woman. Thinking about society today, girls our age aren't ready to be mothers and are not getting married. Actually, some girls this age haven't even had a real relationship yet.
Romeo and Juliet come from different families. Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. "Two households, both alike in dignity from ancient grudge break to new mutiny," (prologue) shows that their families are at war with each other. Situations like this can happen in real life. Sometimes the differences aren't just family, there is also the difference between social class and race.
Both relationships have parental involvement in them. In the story, Juliet is engaged to Paris. "Thus, then, in brief: the valiant Paris seeks you for his love" (1.3 line 79 & 80) shows that Lady Capulet is trying to get Juliet to consider Paris as a husband. In society today, there are also arranged marriages. In certain religions, parents arrange a marriage for their children with people who they consider to be good.
Romeo and Juliet's relationship have similarities and differences from relationships in society today. The similarities show how we could relate a regular relationship to Romeo and Juliet's. The differences contrast the things that make them different. In the end, love is love, and every relationship has similarities and differences.
